OC's II v Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won 100 runs

Rain on Friday seemingly swung the conditions towards more help for the
bowlers and it was no surprise that on losing the toss we were inserted.
Boreham opened with the guesting T.Ives and after a slowish start they had
began to score more heavily when the 1st team coach holed out at deep square
leg.
60-1 became 90-2 when the skipper was caught & bowled leaving the stage set
for the returning Albert and Boreham to take the score up towards 200.
Jason, in a rich vein of form at present, moved towards another 100 whilst uncle
Alb settled in as only he can.
Blessed with a fair share of luck, Jason once again reached a very creditable
century and Alb 50 before both fell within an over of each other.
A combination of lusty blows and good running from those who followed allowed
us to reach a very competitive 249-6 after 45 overs.
A typically nice O.C’s tea was taken and hopes were high of securing a 5th win on
the bounce.
As has become the norm DG & Lulu opened the attack but for the first time for weeks
things didn’t go to plan as the experienced opening batsmen started off at a great pace.
Wilson in particular was making big progress, aided by far to many 4 balls for comfort. This, plus some unusually sloppy fielding at times, made it the toughest
spell in the field this season so far.
Eventually, Swinney lofted a catch to Hillzy at square leg with the score around 70 off of 15 overs. Still the scoring rate prospered, though we did get a second wicket soon after.
Soon after Wilson reached a hard hitting 50 he succumbed to a slog across the line off
of Buns first ball curtesy of a nicely judged catch by Horney at short mid wicket.
From there on in the innings fell apart as DG returning at the opposite end eventually
got his length and line together to rip out the heart of the middle order.
Despite the occasional boundry we kept a stranglehold on proceedings as a mixture of
bowling cleaned up the innings finishing at 149 all out with 8 or 9 overs remaining.
Recovering from a wobble at the start of the O.C’s reply to actually winning by 100 runs made this as pleasing performance as there has been. Real character was shown and this must bode well for the second half of the season.
