Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won 5 Wickets
This was a potentially difficult fixture against a team that doubled us last season !!
We start badly (obviously in shock from actually winning the toss) as the Purleigh opening batsmen make a swift start. Combination of some fine drives and some good fortune through the slip area meant 4 an over scored in the first 10.
Eventually, DG makes a breakthrough when a catch is held at gulley and he quickly
follows up by bowling opposing captain Bowles for single figures.
Hard hitting youngster Freegard succumbs to the first change bowling of the Bun and then most significantly DG bowls both of the dangerous Wilson brothers in quick succession. He continues to bowl through 12 overs picking up a much deserved 5th wicket to finish with 5-37.
Skipper gets a second wicket due to a tumbling catch at mid on by Horney and “miserly†Woodrow comes on and concedes just 7 runs in as many overs picking up the 8th wicket. Quite a turnround means 90ish for 8 with at least 12 overs to go……..
A dull period then follows as we try to prise the last 2 wickets out to ensure full
bonus points. Changing the bowling backfires as another fifty is added by the time the last wicket falls in the last over. 146 all out.
As we take tea our thoughts were mixed as we wonder whether the extra runs gleaned in the last lacklustre half hour would be crucial………….
A bright start from Deano and Boreham meant that we had posted 30 of our target within 8 overs. Then a double blow…….
First Boreham goes to a catch at gulley and then in the following over Deano is bowled by “quicky†Wilson. The game hangs in the balance at 32-2.
Gibbo, back from 1st team duties last week , goes in 3 and the captain trudges in at 4.
Bunny immediately escapes a large appeal for LBW and a drop catch at short leg whilst the ever reliable Gibbo settles in to build what turns out to be the match winning partnership.
Gibbo particularly looks at ease as the scoreboard creeps up to, and then beyond,100
before luck runs out for the skipper as he holes out at mid wicket.
Although both Monkey and the returning Posh go for 0 and 1 respectively, Gibbo reaches a very creditable half-century before he finishes the game with a straight drive for four.
A pleasing win this, ground out against tricky opposition, which now sees us 3rd in the table.
