Fyfield v Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Lost 93 runs
Week 3 and a difficult fixture at Fyfield awaited. So it would prove……..
Captain wins the toss and, as expected, inserts oppo in blustery & showery
conditions.
The Fyfield openers start brightly, their Australian Loy, especially scoring freely. Just as he looked like taking the game by the scruff of the neck, a bit of luck,
he runs himself out.
Combination of this setback and the introduction of our “spin twins†puts a brake on
the scoring.
1 stoppage for rain reduces the match to 42 overs a piece and wickets begin to fall.
For the second week running John Woodrow takes 3 , Mick Lewis returns to pick
up a couple, and with the help of a couple of good catches the innings finishes on 178 all out off of 38.1 overs. D.Shaw, with the help of a life before he scored, made a hard hitting 60. Cause for optimism we felt as we watched the cup final extra time and penalties saga unfold at tea.
It became apparent where Fyfields strength lies when we started our reply.
The 2 opening bowlers effected a stranglehold on run scoring right from the start conceding only 20 or so from the first dozen overs.
Jason was out first, chipping a catch back to the bowler, then in quick succession Blakey and DG where bowled. 30-3 off 15 overs or so.
Gibbo, Monkey and Horney tried to come to terms with the difficult situation but
found it impossible to prise the initiative away from an excellent spell from both
Hartley and Warboys. Surely some respite from the change bowlers…..not a bit
of it.
The change bowlers continued the tight reign on scoring and unfortunately everyone
eventually succumbed to the pressure and found ways of getting out.
Even with a few lusty blows from 10 and Jack (Lewis & McQuire) we were out for
a miserable 85 off of nearly 40 overs.
Whilst its plain to see that our team needs to bat better, I think in this case, we need to take into account the exceptional bowling attack we faced in difficult circumstances.
On this performance Fyfield look to be early contenders for the title, being especially
difficult to beat on their own patch.
Another early season disappointment but in my opinion nothing that a bit of hard work and focus can not put right.
