Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Lost
After our resounding win the previous week, and the fact that we had beaten our friends from “up the hill†twice last season, it surely meant no better chance of securing our second win of the season. How wrong we all were………. After losing the toss and being asked to bat for the second week running our openers Gibbo & Blakey started circumspectly against a tidy opening attack. Blakey, given a couple of lives early on, tried to raise the tempo but lost his partner, caught behind, pegging back our run rate somewhat. At this point Jason (Boreham) Ford, still smarting from his opening day blip, came in and immediately looked assured and watchful, settling in nicely.Blakey eventually ran out of luck by being bowled for 34 and as the mid innings drinks break approached we were handily placed at 90 for 2. Surely a platform to post a 200+ score…….. Unfortunately, almost immediately Dave Garrett holed out to mid wicket bringing in Adam (Monkey) Drew to partner Jason. They kept the scoreboard ticking over for the next 10 or so overs before eventually Monkey was adjudged LBW. With around 10 overs remaining the ageing, rotund skipper slouched to the wicket hoping to pick up the tempo. Boreham, firstly reached a well earned 50, and then was out. Bunny, slogged 2 or 3 boundaries then run himself out (going for a quick single!!) and basically after the Customary end of innings “hit out, or get out†we ended up with a somewhat Disappointing 186-7 off of our 45 overs. Surely though we had enough bowling options to cope……….. Opposing skipper Gary Mayhew opened the innings and after 10 overs the score
was only 30ish, but significantly no wickets had been taken. At this stage a double bowling change was made with wildly differing results. John Woodrow, playing against his old team mates, immediately worried both batsmen at one end, runs, however, became very easy to come by at the other as Monkey tried his luck. John went on to bowl a wonderful spell of 3-43 off of 12 overs (including the wicket of Mayhew for an excellent 60). “Spin twin†Neil Mcquire bowled 12 tidy overs, and Bunny returned to bowl tidily till the death. However, only a certain amount of pressure can be exerted without the fall of regular wickets.
Plucky and commendable though our bowling and fielding was, the winning runs were hit off the 3rd ball of the final over.
Verdict…….. An early setback, which should show us all that nothing can be taken for, granted, even if we have the strongest side on paper for years.
KEEP SMILING, ITS ONLY A GAME !!
