Hullbridge v Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 07 May 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won

The time of year had come, pre season training over and the T-Rippon league in full flow.

Out of the hat first game of the season was every bodies favourite away fixture! Hullbridge, the 2nd teams bogey side.

The Peverel side turned up in fairly good spirits, knowing that we had the strongest 2nd team on paper for years, a Kiwi among the ranks and A good acquisition in Spooner.

Bun and The opposing Skipper went onto the field for the first toss of the season. Knowing the side we had we would have liked to have batted first, they had won the toss and put us in. Relief from all around the camp. Surprise decision as the Hullbridge track is always a pretty good surface.

Spooner and the reliable Gibbo opened up. What an opening combination. After 20 odd overs both players had hit fifties, and the score soon propelled to 135 with the loss of the first wicket. Gibbo falling for a very solid 65, which unfortunately for him was the only chance him or Spoons had given in 25 overs. Fordy who had been padded up for nearly 2Hrs strolled into the crease. Disappointing day for him as he was out for 3. Next in was the new Kiwi import. Blakey. All we can say was short and sweet, tried to destroy the pie but was bowled nearly holding the bowlers hand. We believe he was trying to hit the ball to New Zealand the way he wound up for it. A small collapse had occurred but with Spoons terrorising the opposing attack the team was still strolling along nicely. DG was next to the crease, for a quick fire 17 before he was bowled. After Monkey and Bunny both for 1 but a good innings near the end from Horne (18) steered us to a mammoth 295 – 9.

DG bowling the opener early on and Bun taking the massive wicket of their main man, Hullbridge soon struggled. Neil replaced DG, and took 4 wickets with John Woodrow replacing Bunny. Quite nervous on his debut he soon racked up his first wicket for Hat Pev. Horne then replaced Neil, for 2-3 overs and looked good. Bun then replaced John to take the final wicket. Kiwi Blakey catching the decisive wicket. A win by over 150 runs was certainly the start we were looking for. Quick mention for Birdy who kept very well indeed and will be a big loss next week.
