Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won 2 Wickets
Grainger won the toss and elect to bat on a surprisingly wet pitch after a week of dry weather. Again the Corra wicket was well below the expected standard and it’s lack of pace and bounce led us to believe a low scoring game was on the cards. However things are not always what they seem and it produced a nail-biting affair in front of a well supported home crowd.
Bowling down hill Richardson and Allen were taken to task by the ever aggressive Dave Curtis. Wager as he has done all season bowled up the hill with super accuracy and control in difficult conditions for pace bowling.
Springfield brought up 50 with ease and HPCC turned to spin to try slow down the scoring. Spooner (12-0-71-2) bowled well all afternoon and was unlucky to have several edges and misfields go to the boundary in what was a poor fielding effort by Peverel. Wild tried his hand at the slow stuff and proved effective going for just over four an over in his 11 over spell. Springfield looked set for a huge score but some accurate bowling from Wager and Kirkpatrick saw 27 runs for 6 wickets in the last 6 overs. Notable performances from Springfield were a good 66 from Curtis (3 sixes), 37 from Eley and 36 from Symonds. Springfield finished on 247/9, a lot more than should have been allowed.
At tea Springfield were favourites and after 15 Overs at 50/3 seemed even more so, with the wickets of Phillips (2) Wild (19) and Kitchen (10). However an injury to Ellis and the inexplicable removal of Rudkin from the attack allowed Peverel to gain the initiative and Richardson and Garrett lead the fight back. Richardson skied one to midwicket and was caught for a well composed 41, he and Garret had put on 87 in 18 overs and Peverel were still in the game…..just. Kirkpatrick (8) and Spooner (2) tried and failed to lift the scoring rate and were both bowled. At this stage 102 was required off 12 overs.
Garrett took over in what was to be one of the most astonishing innings seen from a Peverel batsman in recent years. Ably assisted by Tim Phillips he rotated the strike whilst patiently waiting for the right deliveries to punish mercilessly to and over the boundary. The game seemed to swing back Peverel’s way with the fifth last over conceding 15 and HPCC required 32 off 4 overs. However another twist came when Phillips and Allen were bowled in the same over. Three overs and 28 needed; the calm Garrett punished Grainger with a huge six and a four and 15 came off the over including the run that gave Garrett his well deserved century. The penultimate over was the do or die over for both teams and after couple of dot balls Wager came up with the surprise of the summer when he hit a slog sweep six over the huge midwicket boundary. This set up just two required off the last over and a single from each of the first two balls sealed an unlikely win.
Garrett finished on 113* off balls with 4 sixes and 13 fours, an innings of exceptional quality that has kept HPCC near the top of the table.
