Aythorpe Roding v Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Lost 111 runs

Our much liked New Zealand star Zane Hinton had to return home urgently after the sad news of his father’s passing. We wish Zane and his family well and hope to see him on these shores again.

Away to Aythorpe Roding , who won the toss and chose to bat on a dry wicket and outfield. Dove Dixon and Gravatt took advantage of some ordinary bowling upfront from Wild and Wager and quickly had 50 on the board in just the 8th over. Wager soon got into sync and bowled through the remainder of his 12 overs exceptionally well conceding just 43 runs and picking up the wicket of Gravatt (23).

HPCC had a slight let off when the dominant Dove-Dixon was run out for 74 after a tidy piece of work by debutant Chris Hills. Mark Rosewell guilty in the run out incident continued where his partner left off and played a fine innings of 65.

The HPCC bolwing was below par with Kirkpatrick not his usual steady self on return from injury, Allen suffering from Achilles pain, although Richardson and Spooner did well in the last 10 overs to restrict Aythorpe to less than 300. However credit must go to Aythorpe for a fine batting performance and posting a daunting 288/6 off their 45 overs.

After tea HPCC never really looked in the game as numerous well timed strokes from the openers Wild and Philips kept finding the infield. The first to go was Phillips for 39 (49 balls). Richardson joined Wild but Peverel were already well behind the run rate, scoring just 81/1 off the first 20 overs. From this point on a run rate near enough nine an over was a big ask and Richardson 19 (25 balls) and Kirkpatrick 23 (20 balls) perished in the run chase.

The remainder of the middle order tried to lift the scoring rate but a string of single figure scores left Peverel well short of the target at 177 all out. Wild was top scorer on 45 (80) but his slow scoring rate was of detriment to the run chase.

Chasing such a large score is never easy and HPCC will have learnt from this bad day out. Spirits are still high and we are eagerly awaiting the visit by Galleywood this weekend.
