Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 1st XI v Bentley on Sat 21 May 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won 7 Wickets

After a week of inclement weather and the prospect of a soft pitch Bentley captain Gavin Johnson mysteriously elected to bat at Church Road. The game began with controversy over both sets of wicket keeper’s gloves being declared illegal by umpire Ollie Hopkins. After a lengthy debate Rob Kitchen used a spare set of gloves.

Peverel again started with Hinton and Wager who yet again strangled the opposition within the first ten overs, with just 18 runs on the board. Redman and Johnson tried to steady the ship but to no avail, the Peverel bowling was tight and fielding solid. Johnson fell LBW to Allen for 5 after a long struggle at the crease. Thereafter wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and Bentley was bowled out for just 86. Allen ripped through the inexperience middle order to claim consecutive five wicket hauls and take the early lead in the league wicket takers. He was well supported by an aggressive Wild who took three wickets.

Peverel had again showed their intentions for the summer by a very steady fielding performance of holding catches, a direct run out and just a solitary misfield. After tea Phillips and Wild again proved their growing reputations with a selection of classy strokes to notch up a 45 run opening stand, which effectively sealed the match. Peverel lost three wicket in the chase; Phillips (28), Richardson (6) and Hinton (0). Wild hit the winning runs in a very steady 28 not out and Garrett (8*) looked solid in support.

A third win for Peverel in an unexpected manner, leaving the players fresh for the tough assignment away at the undefeated Aythorpe Roding on 28 May.
