Lt Baddow v Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 14 May 2005 at
Hatfield Peverel Cricket Club Won 178 Runs

HPCC’S first away game of the summer was to newly promoted Little Baddow. After a week of dry weather the 1st XI arrived to find perhaps the prettiest ground in the T-Rippon league in superb condition. The pitch was rock hard and LBCC skipper Charlie Julian sent HPCC into bat; a decision he would regret.

A combination of short bowling and some authoritative stroke play from the HPCC openers saw the first 50 come up in just the 7th over. Even with 3 consecutive maidens from Robinson, the openers kept up the run rate and brought up the first century opening stand at HPCC for nearly two years. First to go with the total on 129 in the 21st over was Wild after an exceptional run a ball 56, including boundaries all around the ground. A couple of overs later Phillips was caught for 75 of 64 balls, combining strategic aerial play with deft strokes behind square to the short boundary.

After two quick wickets there was a danger of as mini collapse, but Hinton and the ever-reliable Richardson steadied the ship before again launching the assault. Richardson just was starting to look ominous before he carelessly picked out Cole on the long off boundary for 43 off 35 balls. Spooner (1) and Kirkpatrick (8) followed shortly but all the while Hinton was dominating the bowling. Julian tried to slow down the rate and did for a while until Hinton acclimatised to his line and the hit him for a barrage of sixes.

Tim Phillips (22*) was in good touch before receiving a sickening blow in the face whilst attempting a slog sweep. Martin Allen was run out 1st ball and skipper Kitchen finished off the last two overs with Hinton, who finished unbeaten on a brilliant 86* off just 63 balls, leaving HPCC at the formidable score of 318/7 off the allotted 45 overs.

After tea a confident Peverel attack with only ten fielders set about bowling a consistent line and length to strangle any hope of an unlikely LBCC win. This was accomplished within the first ten overs yielding just 25 runs, with some impressive bowling by Wager (7-2-19-2) and Hinton (9-1-35-1). Golding (40) came in and tried to lift the scoring rate with a combination of cleanly hit strokes and Andy Harris made a solid 39. However the HPCC commitment to a consistent line accompanied by superior pace from all four quick bowlers proved too much for LBCC to handle. They were bowled out for 140 in the 32nd over. All four bowlers were impressive, Hinton bowled aggressively and swung the ball nicely, Wager slowed down a touch and bowled an absolutely perfect line. Wild (7-1-37-1) extracted superb bounce and was unlucky to have five boundaries edged to the very short boundary at third man. However Allen was as usual the pick of the bowlers. His commitment of going for the Yorker, even on a bouncy pitch paid dividends as he took six wickets in a well controlled spell.

Even after a six wicket haul from Allen, the man of the match honours belonged to Wild and Phillips for almost putting the game beyond LBCC within the first twenty overs. The team looks set to perform well in a crunch home match vs Bentley on 21st May
